Spotted: Madewell Polka Dot Dress

I spotted this silk polka dot dress from Madewell and it instantly reminded me of the dress Julia Roberts wore in Pretty Woman. I've always thought she looked charming & lovely in that dress and wanted something similar for myself. And now, I finally found it. I prefer wearing it with bare legs but I also like the way Madewell stylized the dress with gray tights to make it more fall-appropriate. What do you guys think?

  1. I will bite.

This is the sort of thing which I would have completely overlooked a few years ago as being too "simple." But actually, it's highly versatile and can be worn so many ways, and is flattering. The minute you mentioned Pretty Woman, I knew which dress you were referring to, which goes to show that in fact a polka dot dress in a neutral color is memorable. I suppose you could stick a turtleneck under there and it would still look charming and carry into even cooler months.

I was Googling photos of Jackie O and Lee Radziwall the other day and was startled by how much of what they wore looks like some version of JCrew and its ilk today. Jackie wore plenty of polka dots--in the 70s. This dress is timeless and the neutral color makes it more sophisticated than if it were, oh, yellow.

I don't know if you are going to any of the fashion shows, Mizhattan, but I would surely love to hear your impressions if you have any. I'm a nose-pressed-against-the-window watcher of fashion week.

While I'm carrying on about Kennedys--CBK was another figure whose style I didn't understand as a youngster. But those photos you posted the other day still work today--her style was timeless. Should you come across desirable animal print items, I'd be curious to see your findings. I'm also stuck trying to figure out if a furry animal print coat is "better" or if a printed cotton coat is better.

Sorry for the long windedness. My friends with whom I used to talk fashion have all moved away, or have "grown up" and stopped caring.

    1. The dress is definitely versatile and timeless. A majority of the components of fashion can be trendy and/or circular but some designs ultimately stand the test of time. I think this polka print is one of them.

I have/will attend(ed) a few shows during this NYFW. As it just started, it's too early to say what my impressions are so I'll get back to you on this one.

Jackie, Lee, and Carolyn are all fantastic examples of true style icons. All three should be studied vigorously by anyone interested in fashion and style.

Do you have any examples of the furry coat and cotton coat? Let me see them and I'll let you know which one I like better.

I love your long thorough comments, no need to feel sorry. Keep them coming! I'm actually sorry for my late reply.

  2. I think it's really nice. Not sure what the quality will be like but I'm guessing it will be decent.

  3. Madewell has a new head designer now. It'll be interesting to see how the clothes change.

On a somewhat related note, this fall we are supposed to see Narcisso Rodriguez's hand in Banana Republic clothing. I will be curious to see if he does indeed impact design there.
