*SAMPLE SALE* Not So Tory-fic

Joining December's long list of sample sales is the much anticipated Tory Burch event. The label officially kicks off their bi-annual sale tomorrow, but just like the previous years, the folks at Clothingline decided to open the sale early. I'll get right to the point. Today's Tory Burch sample sale was not so terrific.

First of all, prices have gone up since the last sale in June. Sneakers are now $99 (up $25) while prices on ballet flats have increased a whooping $51. Second, there were no coveted designs like Reva or Chelsea. The only styles that were available were Asher loafers in leopard & black, Jess flats in maroon & navy, Layne pumps, Eddie ballets in metallic colors, Benjamin sneakers, wedge pumps, fur boots, and buckled knee-high boots in utilitarian styles.

Sadly, the handbag section wasn't very impressive either. I was especially shocked to find a Robinson envelope clutch priced at $195 because the brand is currently selling the exact same bag for $172.50 online. Robinson minis were also available in blue & various prints and they were $195. In addition, Robinson triangle totes & dome satchels were $295. Other than the Robinsons, there were other designs like the Amanda. Amanda logo clutches were $195 while messengers were $250. I also spotted Amanda dome satchels priced $275 and handle hobos were $275 (available in blue, purple, green, and yellow). For full pricing on handbags, please refer to the handbag photos below.

Now, let's move to RTW. Merchandise was organized by size and were available from 0 to 12. Though the sale offered many different varieties perfect for office & cocktail hours, I was disappointed there weren't enough outerwear pieces considering it's a winter sample sale. Plus, prices weren't as great as I hoped. Tees & polos were $65, blouses were $85, tunics were $95, cardigans were $95, sweaters were $125 (yikes!), bottoms were $85, dresses were $150, evening dresses were $450 (shocking!), and blazers were $195.

Again, tomorrow is the official opening to this week's Tory Burch sample sale. Unless you're a diehard fan of the brand and can't stand the idea of missing out on anything Tory Burch, I highly suggest you skip this event. It just wasn't worth the time. This all changes, of course, if they slash prices at the end. I will make sure to notify you in the comment section if/when it happens.

  1. How disappointing... Thank you for saving my time, Miz.

  2. I went there. This is a "Sample Sale" impostor. Simple flats without the Tory Burch symbol were $150. I could get them cheaper in Nordstrom or Saks Fifth. I think this sample sale is officially overrated. I may stop by at the end of the week if prices get low enough. Oh, and I have never seen that many empty handed people leaving a Clothingline sample sale.

    1. It was a disappointment. I can't argue with that.

    2. Yeah, I just don't understand. The Jess flat is $147.50. Add ebates and it's even less. Shrug.

  3. Thank you, Mizhattan. I was feeling like I ought to go, more than I wanted to, but your review makes the decision to skip much easier.

I have mixed feelings about Tory Burch. Your photos of the Spring 14 collection, for example, make me really excited. On the other hand, I really wish she didn't feel the need to monogram absolutely everything. Anyway, I will give this a pass and consider Alice and Olivia.

    1. I went to Burch yesterday and going to go to AO later (after it stops snowing). TB is a pass but like you I'm excited to see what AO has. My friend who went yesterday night said she didn't leave emptyhanded which is a good sign.

    2. Racked NY has their review of the Alice+Olivia sale (from the preview night) up already. It looks like there are some nice pieces but so far I'm not tempted to go out in this weather.

    3. I actually went, precisely because of the weather! There was no line to get in--small line for the fitting room. For me, the sale was an enormous success. I fit the samples, and the sample prices seemed pretty fair. $50 for gorgeous jackets (red velvet, with cut roses) and $99 for a beaded body con knit black dress. And a few other things.

I read that they will replenish stock and samples. When I went the regular stock had already gotten mixed in with the samples, so you have to be careful.

There is no city like NYC for shopping. Oh the vain pride of being able to wear a sample (which I can't in all designers, but god it's great when it works out . . .)

    4. Anything else at the sale worth mentioning? Maybe I'll drop by if enticed enough.

    5. I don't know! It depends on what you are looking for. The samples covered most categories, though I was most interested in statement jackets, leather leggings/pants and dresses. You may be a person who doesn't want or need these things. There were a number of gorgeous gowns, though I don't really have a reason to buy a mammoth dress. I think it's been noted elsewhere that there were few accessories and no shoes. For me the sample section was a bonanza for wonderful jackets and a party top and a dress. Most things were $100 or under--I think $50 for a well fitting and well made jacket out of interesting fabric is a steal. And I love jackets. They just pull together and elevate most any outfit.

  4. Would be curious to hear any thoughts on the upcoming Rachel Comey sale. It's far for me. But I love her shoes and am curious about her clothing.

  8. I have been for the second day at A&O... I things this sale Is amazing, there are so many samples that there is not even time to check the other racks...
Jackets are almost gone, but there are still tons of dresses (regular dresses for 59$, leather dresses for 99$, embellished dresses for 119$), many sweaters, pants and skirts... In my opinion it is definitely worth a visit, no line at all
