*SAMPLE SALE* ICBG

Marking the first sample sale of 2014, the BCBG Max Azria & Hervé Léger event kicked off today at Clothingline. It's been almost a month since I attended a sample sale, and because I've been itching for a good post-holiday bargain, I hurried to the Fashion District hoping to start off the new year right.

For this sale, the Clothingline showroom housed three different labels--BCBG, Max Azria, and Hervé Léger--from one company. Though the majority of today's inventory was from BCBG and Max Azria, I started my shopping in the Hervé Léger section.

We all know Hervé Léger's signature bandage dresses can do wonders for a woman's figure and at today's sale, I found 5 wall racks plus 1 circular stand worth of Hervé merchandise. The first thing I noticed was that everything was discounted 70% off original retail prices. The event had a variety of siren-worthy styles such as vibrant orange beaded skirts for $690 (originally $2,300 & 8th photo below), black sequin cutout dresses for $465 (originally $1,550), deep V-neck mustard yellow dresses for $375 (originally $1,250 & 6th photo below), strapless multi-print dresses for $660 (originally $2,200 & 4th photo below), and red striped dresses for $507 (originally $1,690 & 1st photo below). As you can see, prices weren't impressive considering you can find similar deals from department stores. Sizes ranged from XS to L. If you can't find an item in your size, neon placards placed on nearby walls stated that you should ask a sale associate for help.

After checking out the higher-end goods, I moved onto the BCBG area. Just like Hervé, BCBG merchandise was marked down 70%. Here, I found an assortment of womenswear which included fur-trimmed winter jackets, faux fur boleros, snake-print dresses, biker jackets, floor-length evening gowns, lace skirts, and printed silk blouses. Sizes were available from XS/0 to M/8.

The Max Azria department held 15 racks of RTW--mostly office ensembles. I spotted everything from wool trench coats to croc-embossed pencil skirts and tailored fit trousers to office blazers. A better part of the items were in neutral colors and, again, everything was 70% off retail. Sizes were plentiful and ran from XXS/00 to XL/12.

Unfortunately, today's BCBG, Max Azria, and Hervé Léger sample sale was so-so on the gratification meter. The fact that there were no handbags or shoes available made the shopping experience even more disappointing. As I left, I asked a Clothingline employee whether there was a chance of further markdowns and was told it was "too soon to know". I will keep you updated on this matter via Twitter and also this article's comment section.

  1. Thanks, Mizhattan. I know I can always count on you. Do you remember how much the snakeskin skirts were? Also, did you see anything flowy in the BCBG section? I'm not really a fan of bandage dresses.

    1. Didn't get the price on that skirt, sorry. Nothing super billowy but a few loose fit dresses if you're interested.

    2. I already purchased two BCBG dresses at Woodbury Commons earlier this year during the major sales so I think I might wait for news of markdowns. I'm disappointed the prices weren't better at this sale as BCBG already has pretty good regular sales.

  2. Thank you for sharing this. I hate Clothingline sales in general and your post is very helpful. I don't like to waste my time or money.

  4. I enjoyed the sale. I found the selection was very, very good. While the sale may not have had a few items found at the boutiques, the discount was solid.

  5. The discount wasn't solid. It was laughable at best. A commenter above said it accurately when she wrote that BCBG already has pretty good sales. This sale is a skip.

    1. 70% off is a high discount for herve leger. Had I wished it would have been off sale prices instead of retail? Of course. But the selection was great and I got to try everything on to ensure it fit. I don't have a car to go to the outlets and I'm not spending $40 to do so on the bus from Port Authority.

  6. I wish I lived in the world where I could say 70% off isn't solid. Maybe I need to relocate to New York.

    1. Why not follow Mizhattan and plan a trip to New York to attend your favorite designer sale. Remember to come in the night before, because we really do line up 3 hours in advance for a great sale!

  7. How NYers view sample sales:

65% off: My time is valuable
70% off: Eh. I've seen better
    75% off: Eyebrow raised
80% off: You have my attention
85% off: Calling everyone I know
90% off: Now this is a sample sale.
95% off: I'm in heaven. Calling no one.

    1. Not sure if your post is accurate, I think 65% is pretty good and I live in Manhattan.

    2. 65% is for department stores. I think she's referring to actual "sample" sales.

    3. it doesn't matter where you buy as long as it is a good deal

  8. I guess I disagree. I went yesterday and found a couple of pieces that were a must have for me, especially, I never seen that great of a variety at a regular sale in BCBG. This sample sale actually had dresses I was eying in Lord & Taylor (which had those dresses at only 30% off).

Additionally, I don't know how well you looked, but there were a ton of handbags on racks behind the cash register that were also 70% off.

There was an incredible amount of formal wear as well. For somebody that is getting married this year, I found a couple of options for my bridesmaids (we are on our way there in a few minutes).

So again, I'll agree to disagree. This sample sale has too much variety of items and pretty good discounts. I say it is a go!

  9. BTW, I didn't even notice any work wear since there are just too many things to see at this sample sale.
