*SAMPLE SALE* Racks of Lam

Designer Derek Lam is one busy person these days. Not only is he the creative talent behind both Tod's & his namesake line, but he recently launched a collection for eBay. On top of that, his new diffusion line called 10 Crosby will debut this November. So, was his spring sample sale as promising as his career?

After yesterday's downpour, today's bright sunshine made for a perfect day to go down to Soho for the Derek Lam sample sale. When I arrived at 10 Crosby (yes, the new diffusion line is named after address of his office), there was no line to get in. I hopped on the elevator to the 3rd floor and was shown into a small room lined with racks of clothes and a table of shoes. There was a small crowd busily picking–&–choosing from Derek Lam's past collections.

Other than two dedicated "under $150" racks & bins, prices were higher than what savvy super shoppers would liked to see. Here are some of the $150 & under items I spotted: gowns were $150, coats/jackets were $100, skirts were $50, blouses were $50, and tops/knits were $25. Great prices, but not so great in quality or fashion appeal (at least to me). So, what about the rest of their merchandise? I found Derek Lam's clean, sharp, and minimal pieces organized by type. I spotted a knee–length printed skirt that would be perfect for the hot summer days and a cotton trench that would go perfectly well with jeans. All in all, most items that I saw were everyday basics in relaxed silhouettes. You can't exactly expect a huge steal from a high–end label, but being a sensible shopper, I found pricing to be relatively high. Dresses went for $250~$1,050, while pants & shorts went for $125~$175. Skirts were priced $150 for cottons and $750 for suedes. Knits were around $250 and tops were $200~$450.

If you're interested in accessories, I'm happy to report that shoes and bags were available at this event. Shoes were $175~$325, while bags were $250~$350. One of my favorites, Derek Lam's Evie clutch in tweed, was there. Full pricing is attached at the end of this article. To sum it up, like yesterday's Lela Rose sample sale, I felt the pricing at this sale was a bit high. If you are not a hardcore Lam fan, I would wisely save up money for the many other sample sales that are coming up.
