*SAMPLE SALE* Simons Says

When Belgian avant-garde designer Raf Simons first arrived at Jil Sander in 2005, he was an unrecognized name in fashion. Thanks to his groundbreaking directorship, he had become one of  the most innovative minimalist designers. Now that his professional journey ended at the German fashion house, many shoppers ventured to today's Jil Sander sample sale in hopes of buying Raf's pieces for fraction of the cost.

The Jil Sander sample sale has always been a go-to sale for me. I usually find lots of long-lasting wearable clothes and accessories at amazing bargain prices. Now that Raf Simons is heading to Christian Dior, I was determined to rummage around EXTRA carefully since I know finding Raf Simons' creations at a sample sale will become much harder in the future. So, with my eyes wide open, I entered the company's showroom to start my bargain hunting.

Just like previous years, women's & men's RTW, shoes, bags, and accessories were discounted 80~85% off. While discounts were amazing, this year's merchandise & selection was quite disappointing. Handbags & shoes, for example, were very limited and unappealing to my eyes. There were only a few shoulder bags & oversized totes at the handbag counters & shelves. And the shoes area was comprised of mostly of basic black pumps ($71) & boots.

Women's RTW was reduced 85% off retail. I found lots of office basics: suits, button-down shirts ($52), pencil skirts ($97), tailored blazers, and trousers. The mustard yellow belted dress from the Fall 2011 collection especially caught my eye. It was priced only $417 (originally $2,780, 5th photo below). I also spotted puffer down jackets for $217 (originally $1,450), and long pale pink coats for $552 (originally $3,680). Knits were neatly organized on a long table in the middle of the room. I found bright colored sweaters from the FW 2011 collection that drew many glances. The kelly green sweaters were $162 (originally $1,080, 9th photo below).

The men's side was a huge letdown. There were only 3 racks of blazers & winter coats plus a single table of sweaters & cardigans. If you're looking to find men's pieces, I highly suggest skipping this sale. On my way out, I noticed there were 4 racks of summer pieces that were also discounted 85% off. Oh! Finally, though this sale was invite-only, no one was checking invites.

  2. Eh. Since I already picked up some white button down shirts from Hugo Boss this seems like a sale to skip. Still, I always appreciate how complete your reviews are. Keep up the great reporting! :)
