*SAMPLE SALE* Early Word from Today's Diptyque VIP

The Diptyque sample sale opened its doors to VIP patrons at 4pm today. Though I wasn't able to attend, fellow Mizhattanites were kind enough to send in their takes on the sale. And so, here's a quick rundown of what you can expect tomorrow.

With the change of venue to Century 21, it is a huge relief to know there has not been any jump in prices when compared to previous events. Everything is still up to 50% off retail with standard size candles marked down to $35 and minis priced at $17. In addition, the same 15 item limit (standard candle is set at 10 per person) is in effect once again to try and prevent hoarding. I'm told saavy scent shoppers will be disappointed to hear that fan favorite Baies in standard size was in limited supply and much of it was grabbed up by early bird shoppers. However, there is an abundance of minis, holiday editions, box sets, and body care products still available for tomorrow's public opening. Other sale tidbits include fig box sets priced at $40 while Feu de Bois box sets were $70. Finally, it should be noted that the checkout line moved at an incredibly slow pace so make sure to bring your patience as you stand outside in the cold or wait inside to pay.

I will be there bright and early tomorrow to cover the opening day sale line so check in on Twitter and keep a look out for the full Mizhattan report. For those lucky enough to score an invite to today's preview, I kindly ask that you share your insight on the sale with your fellow Mizhattanites by dropping a line in the comment section below.

  1. Nice write up: just to note, minis are $17, not $15.

The 15 item limit is non-negotiable.they may fix it for tomorrow, but many of the larger perfumes are not organized by name; they are all just on shelves and you'll have to dig for what you're looking for.

Everything Baies was snatched up fast, including the box set of Baies scented ovals and large candle. They were only $40.

The space only holds about 30-40 people, and there was a strict one-in/one-out policy. If they have it tomorrow, folks are going to be waiting outside for a long time.

  2. I was able to get into the VIP sale today. I went right at 4 when it started and there was a line of about 20 people ahead of me. Once we were let in, I was fairly impressed with the variety of merchandise.

They had those huge versions of their candles ($140 I think) - not a ton, but people were grabbing those mega Baies along with Figeur ones. They also had some of the larger colored glass candles in the 4 scents those come in ($48). Again, no idea if they'll restock them but my guess is they will.

Scented candles I grabbed were Feu De Bois, John Galliano, Amber, Patchouli, The, Feuille de Lavande and Cypres - all in standard size ($35). Other scents I noticed were Pin, Pomander, Baies, Ciel, Vervienne....and a bunch of others I'd never really heard of.

Of course there were the towers of holiday scents. But I'll add that this years holiday collection was much stronger than in previous years. Also a section of gift sets and the like.

A word of caution - I purchased a pair of those wick-trimming scissors for $20. Turns out in the box was one of those candle snuffers. Not a big deal, but check inside the box on specialty items.

Overall, a great sale and the staff was rather accomodating. 15 items max was strictly enforced.

  3. Colored candles are up in price and are now $48. If you're going for baies or roses candles don't bother. The venue is bigger than 225 and the staff is very helpful. Good luck to all those waiting in line! Read my full review at samplesally.com
