*SAMPLE SALE* Anglomania Invasion

The revered grande dame of British fashion, Vivienne Westwood, infuses her collections with a rebellious spirit. And New Yorkers should get ready for a taste of that rebellious spirit as the fashion world's favorite Dame is expected to expand her brand across the pond and bring her signature modern punk flair to America when her first-in-a-very-long-time NYC boutique opens this fall. So, what better way to prepare for this Anglomania invasion than by grabbing one of her designs at a fraction of the cost? If you consider yourself a big Anglophile with an ever-constant yearning for that BIG bargain, I think you'll find this week's Vivienne Westwood sample sale to your liking.

The sale organizers of this spring's Vivienne Westwood sample sale gave me a sneak peek inside the sale space this morning. I know many of my fellow Mizhattanites are feeling upset about yesterday's Lanvin private sale but this review might help cheer you up because there are many good details I want to share with all of you.

When I dropped by the venue, all of the merchandise was neatly organized and ready to go for tomorrow's opening. Women's RTW was divided into two discount percentage groups: 60% off and 90% off. The space housed racks upon racks of Dame Westwood's main label as well as her diffusion lines. Anglomania, Gold Label, and Red Label were well represented. The 60% off marked items were from her recent collections while the 90% off inventory was from a few seasons back.

To give you some nitty gritty pricing details, here are some mentionable items from the 60% off section. A brown orchid print dress was $768 (1st photo below), a red plaid jacket from the Red Label was $560 (2nd photo below), a pair of floral-print sweatshorts were $58 (3rd photo below), a brocade corset top was $222 (4th photo below), a draped iridescent dress was $198 (5th photo below), and a gold/black cocktail frock was $1,512 (7th photo below).

The 90% off apparel section was incredible. A casual denim jacket was $32.50 (10th photo below), a green metallic blazer was $86.90 (11th photo below), a sleeveless knit dress was $49.50 (12th photo below), a purple dotted blouse was $147.50 (13th photo below), a red heart-printed dress was $148 (14th photo below), and an ivory leather jacket was $184.50 (16th photo below). Also, I think it's worth mentioning that prices on jeans started at just $20!

Women's shoes were mostly comprised of Vivienne Westwood's jelly designs for Melissa. In addition, a small selection of multi-strap sandals, pumps, and children's were on offer. All women's footwear products were $49.99 while children's were $29.99. Please note, though, sizes were very limited.

Handbags were abundant and markdowns fit in either the 50% off or 80% off category. While browsing, I saw a Victoria top handle bag for $515 (25th photo below), a plaid Conduit tote for $555 (27th photo below), and a large black bow tote for $260 (26th photo below). Wallets and sunglasses were also available. Wallets were priced $70~$150 while sunnies were $120.

After searching through the women's goods, I took a brief moment to check out the men's offerings. Just like women's clothing, menswear was reduced to 60% off or 90% off. The discounted inventory included everything from clean white button-down shirts to tailored suits and something a bit more eccentric like plaid blazers and colorful paisley print shirts.

The Vivienne Westwood sample sale doesn't usually draw a huge crowd which means you can discount shop in relative peace. If you're looking to grab a deal on this Brit brand, I'll end this article by saying that prices were very impressive--especially in the apparel section. There won't be much restocking (if at all) so don't dilly dally if Westwood is your thing.

    1. Hi Jessica,

      Unfortunately, there was no jewelry.

  2. Do you know if the men's suits were 60 or 90 off and if there was a range of sizes?
    Thanks so much.

    1. Men's suits were 60% off. I can't comment on the size range because I only did a quick look around on the menswear goods.

  3. Thanks for another awesome report! These prices are pretty good, I must say. Are there any other leather jackets other than the ivory one? Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Sarah,

There was plenty of other outerwear but this was the only leather jacket. Thank you for reading!

  4. I got there at 11 today and all the bags were picked over by people who were buying 30 at a time. No joke. I was told there's no restocking. Really disappointing given these sales are typically b wetter stocked at least on the first day!

    1. I wish these sales would limit the amount a person could buy of an item type at least the first few days of the sale. Have the Ebay resellers come in at the end.

    2. i agree! my niece went to lilly and she said 5 women ran in and got everything
here is an 18 yr old college student who really loves lilly and couldn't get 1 item
its very sad what is happening with sales these days!

  5. I got there at 10:05 and had to wait in line to take the elevator up, but the sale itself was not terrible. To the person who wanted to know about the ivory leather jackets--there were other leather jackets (black), but they were in the 60% off, not 90% off rack. I think almost all the shoes were 36, and they were gone by the time I checked out. The bags weren't that well priced (or attractive), I thought, but the clothes were AMAZING. I had to seriously restrain myself. Some of the pieces they sold me at 90% off wholesale, not retail prices, so we're talking $15 shirts and $19 dresses.

  6. Know your collections. Some 60-90% stuff got mixed or not marked with sale sticker. Only the manager knows exactly what is current or not. Had to argue with one cashier over my tiger print tee which was last season and not marked. Manager corrected it

  9. I bought bunch of stuff but they insisted the prices were 60% and 90% off of retail, not wholesale. Know your collections, by now they are mixed up.

    1. I just got back. I don't know who said wholesale prices but they were all retail in the men's section. The racks are very easy to navigate through and it's not busy. Men's inventory in 90% off is pretty picked through. They haven't put further mark downs on the 60% off section so in this section you are still paying $200 up for each piece (not worth it in my opinion unless you love this line).

Three pairs of shoes left. Somebody said a few people bought almost all of the mens shoes. I was lucky and found one button down shirt for $54. There are lots of men's pants left (but that is given in any sale) and there is a decent size rack of blue jeans although I didn't pay much attention to them. Shirts in 90% section were generally off sizes or styles and colors.

Be forewarned there is one very cool looking leather jacket size 50 Euro for I think ~$230 in the 90% off section. Its size is much smaller than stated and its for a short person with long arms. Just warning the ladies who may see it and want to buy it for their gentleman.

Overall - I would check out if in area but not go out of my way if hard to get to.

  12. I went back since it's not far from me. no further markdowns! 90% and 80% sections still the same. I'm guessing they will just keep the merchandise if they don't sell it.

In the men's section, the blazers were geared toward larger men with tons of Euro Size 50 (US 40). I'm a US 38 and there was nothing to be found. Trouser and Jeans also for waist size 34 and up or size 30 and down. Nothing for the standard 32 waist size. I was out of luck but other men who are larger or smaller may find something.
