*SAMPLE SALE* Reed All About It

Extra, extra! Reed all about it! As you may have heard, Reed Krakoff's namesake brand is closing shop after a five year run. During its operation, the company was known to host private employee sample sales at their corporate office in the westside of Manhattan. This week, for the first time ever, the label opens their doors to the public in hopes of clearing out their remaining inventory. I had a chance to check out the brand's sample sale for the first time (and most probably the last time), which was overall a sad experience.

The timing of the Reed Krakoff sample sale couldn't have been more perfect for me since I have been meaning to check out their in-store offerings before they actually pulled the plug. When I stopped by the sale during their F&F hours, I was surprised and sad to see the SoHo sale space so quiet. There was barely a crowd and I was able to browse through the goods in a calm and collected fashion.

I started my inspection in the handbag section and I'm sorry to report discounts weren't as impressive as I hoped. Prices ranged from $100 to $400 for leathers (most were $200 and above) while exotics were priced $500 to $1,500. I saw a RK40 in dark brown priced $300 (3rd photo below), a RK40S in white priced $200 (4th photo below), a three-tone mini Atlantique priced $300, and a Krush hobo priced $300. Although pricing didn't meet my expectations--considering it's a going-out-of-business sample sale--I'm sure everyone will agree markdowns from this sale are deeper than what the company is offering online.

Located next to bags were accessories and SLGs. Items included wallets, sunglasses, belts, gloves, scarves, and jewelry. Markdowns were very reasonable. Wallets were mostly $100, sunglasses were $75, belts were $50, gloves were $50, and scarves were $100. Jewelry was prices individually and each piece was 75% off retail. The jewelry selection included a wide assortment of bracelets plus a few earrings & necklaces. I spotted Vampire chain cuffs for $98, a wide leather cuffs for $173, Machine two-tone cuffs for $248, T-pin bracelets for $248, and T-Bar drop earrings for $63.

Shoes were divided into two categories: samples and overstocks. Sample shoes were $75 and $100 while overstock production shoes were priced individually with markdowns hovering around the 75% off mark. Sample footwear was organized on six racks (18th photo below) while non-sample shoes were displayed on tables in the back and friendly sales associates were waiting on hand to help shoppers with sizes and prices. While browsing, I spotted a pair of black ankle boots for $187 (14th photo below), Atlas cutout booties for $198 (16th photo below), python ankle wrap sandals for $198, metal ankle strap sandals for $212, silver pumps for $187 (17th photo below), and knee high boots for $248 & $323 (15th photo below).

RTW was also divided into two categories: samples and overstocks. The three sample racks consisted of jackets, pants, dresses and tops with prices starting at $50 and going up to $175. Overstocks were discounted 75% off with eighteen racks of womenswear neatly lined up on the left side of the venue. I found a rose double-breasted jacket for $372.50, a long tweed coat for $872.50 (24th photo below), a printed sequin dress for $997.50, a fuchsia ruche gown for $572.50, and a sleeveless V-neck top for $297.50.

Overall, I thought today's Reed Krakoff sample sale offered nice discounts but it just didn't satisfy my bargain needs. Still, there is no arguing that prices were far better than what is being offered on the brand's online store.

  2. The prices are disappointing considering Woodbury outlet is doing 80% off retail on the whole store.

    1. Hi El R,

Yes, I agree. Didn't know Woodbury was doing 80% off. Thanks for the heads up!

    2. I went a few weeks ago. Woodbury will also close as the brand closes shop. I'm not sure when their last day will be, but as of my last visit, Woodbury was doing 80% off the whole store. There was still some decent stock left.

  3. Thanks for this - I'll be checking it out in the morning....

  4. Wait is Woodbury closing too? I thought it was staying open?

    1. Woodbury is also closing shop, but I would call them to check when they're closing and what their current deal is. I went in April, so I don't know if they're still open.

  7. Thanks for having your review out before the public sale. While it's not liquidation prices, the samples seem decently priced. Do you recall what the selection was like for 37/38 samples? And did they have orange or green hashtags?

    1. Hi Nara,

Most of the samples were 37 and 38 so you're in luck there. I didn't see any orange or green hang tags.

  8. Woodbury started to do bags at 70% a few weeks ago, because they sold so many at the lower price. Never had RK40's there though. And, often, no bags at all, except for exotics.

I also thought that the prices would be better, all things considered, but wasn't surprised that there weren't more people there. It isn't as popular a brand as Proenza, Marc Jacobs, Manolo, etc and that may be part of why it's going out of business.

A lot of the merchandise was damaged, at least bag wise, so please make sure to check them carefully before you buy. A pretty damaged crossbody was $100, but a perfect one was only $50 more a few months back on the website...

Still pretty curious if you bought anything though, Miz..sounds like a no?

  9. I was surprised that there weren't any of the Boxers that 260 has in the image of the sale..I asked if there was more stock to come out later, and was told no.

    1. There were Boxers in the bag section. Not in classic black but in other versions.

    2. I didn't see the bright blue, green or white that was in their promo image..did you? Maybe they were gone? The ones I did see were either damaged or in fall colors..

  10. Sorry, first commenter, I got the orange RK40L..it was a sample and not totally finished on the interior and had some minor damage on the interior and the back..but overall, not bad and I had to have it.

There was a white bag that was less money, forget the style, and it was missing the back pocket, which looked as if it were ripped off, looked pretty bad from the back, but the front looked ok.

Another pretty bag had the back of the belt missing, which also looked pretty obvious.

Does anyone know if there is a place that can fix or add on any of that stuff that is missing or damaged?

Also was surprised that it wasn't 80% like I thought it was advertised, unless the samples were (shoes, etc)?

I had a tough time with the shoes but maybe other styles weren't bad..seemed every one I wanted to check out had no size marked on it..pretty frustrating.

Also, I think that the sample shoes didn't have a box and some were pretty scuffed up but the higher priced ones did have a bag..not sure about a dust bag for them.

My bag didn't come with a dustbag either, and I was told that they didn't have them.

I wonder how long the website will be up and if they will reduce their prices too?

  11. Ooops, meant shoe box:)

Someone else bought the white RK40 small that is pictured, around the time I checked out at the register.

I saw some hangtags but only remember seeing metallics..not the colors you asked for..

And, I was pretty happy with the quiet vibe, though I was surprised also. I hate the line cutting, waiting on line, competitive, rushed, claustrophobic atmosphere that sales like the Marc Jacobs one last week, or a DVF, YSL, etc are like, personally.

It's also not as well known or as popular of a brand, which may have been part of it too..and no logos..and a lot of people like to have very recognizable status symbols

  14. Hmmm, seems like I'll skip it! Thanks for the update!

  15. I bought a minaudiere (the edge is on the left of the 4th picture, pewter and gold and lucite) and a brown and gray felt Boxer.

I must say though, the purse section was destroyed from the time I got in (around 10:05) to the time I left (around 10:35). There were somewhere around 25 women cycling through the purse area, cordoned off in a space about the size of a public restroom. Clutches were about 2/3 gone, and purses were about half gone. Most of the recognizable styles were gone in that cut. And a salesperson told me that there wouldn't be restocking. I did see a lot of women pondering what to buy and making the cut at the checkout, but it looks bad.

Clothes, and to some extent shoes, were super chill.

  16. Bags were pretty much gone, shoes selection limited to 37 and 40 by 11AM today. RTW still pretty pricey. Should have skipped this one...

  17. Bag section was obliterated by the time I got there around 12:05pm...let's hope they restock!

  18. Was there any jewelry left? Debating whether to stop by after work today.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I saw a bunch of jewelry by the check-out so you may luck out.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Any bag restock?

    ReplyDelete
  21. They said no bag re-stock..they already had put out their damaged bags during F&F..and didn't fill up the gaps on the shelves and table as things were bought..

The jewelry is still about $100 or more for a piece -and nothing is made of gold or silver, etc..

  22. Sounds like a disappointment sale, happy I skipped it.

  23. can someone please update what remains today?

    1. I am curious as well. They marked down the price, but did not say how much in the email. If it is not an additional 50% off, it is not worth going.

      Delete
    2. They're usually more specific in their IG posts. The reductions are as follows:
      85% off production
      $25 for grey concepts
      $20 lifestyle aka those trays
No idea what's left but it looked half empty on the first day

    3. Apparently they just announced even further markdowns but no details.
