*SAMPLE SALE* Wowza Proenza

This year's first Proenza Schouler sample sale kicked off at 8am this morning at their newly selected sale space inside Century 21. Since this is the brand's first time hosting their sale at a third party venue, I was a bit worried how the prices would be affected. But after checking out this morning's offerings, I am happy to report markdowns were as pleasant as any of their bargain events from previous years.

According to a few fellow Mizhattanites who scoped out the sale at yesterday's F&F portion, this summer's 3-day Proenza Schouler event offers great markdowns on Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez's bold and artistic designs. This was music to my ears as I had anticipated the worst when it came to the price list. The only downside I found from my own digging was that the handbag selection was not as abundant and robust this time around. The label's iconic PS1 satchel, which was plentiful at last year's sale, was either barely available from the onset or all spoken for well within the first 30 minutes of opening. I spotted one very lucky shopper walking around the floor with a salmon pink python suede PS1 (priced $1,275).

So what was available in the handbag section? Not much. There were Proenza Schouler x Le Bon Marché shopping totes for $79 (originally $595), white PS13 totes for $399 (originally $2,495), shearling zip pouches for $99 (originally $575), and tiger print Lunch bags for $399. That's about it and even these were being snatched up fast. Therefore, my MizAdvice to readers looking for a handbag is to skip this sale and wait for the one in the fall.

In addition to bags, there was a very budget-friendly selection of small leather goods and other accessories housed within several vitrines. Wallets, credit card holders, and other SLGs were tagged at $49 while PS11 keychains were up for grabs for $39. Scarves and jewelry were also displayed on the main level and they were definitely worth a look as well. Priced at $99, there was a generous assortment of cashmere silk scarves discounted down from $480. In addition, costume jewelry was priced $39 while pearl necklaces and pearl bracelets were marked down to $775.

Women's shoes were placed on the upper floor and consisted of pumps, boots, booties, sandals, peep-toes, and flats. A pair of leather high heel booties were $291 (originally $970), cross-front heels were $329 (originally $1,095), pony loafers were $224 (originally $745), textured pumps were $179 (originally $595), snakeskin pumps were $209 (originally $695), PS1 ankle strap cap toe flats were $278 (originally $750), woven flat sandals were $353 (originally $1,175).

The brand's past seasons' apparel was organized on racks and located all over the venue on both floors. Every item was priced as marked and discounts ranged up to 70% off. While heavy winter coats, jackets, and dresses were definitely drool-worthy, jeans were the best deal in the RTW section. From bleach wash denim to black skinnies, jeans were affordably priced at $29~$44 with sizes available from 25 to 32. There was also a single rack of paint splattered denims for $110 but no one seemed interested in them. For those looking way ahead to winter dressing, heavy outerwear and long coats were tagged between $450 and $1,950. Other items worth noting were $885 soft leather jackets (originally $2,950) and $595 tweed dresses (originally $1,950).

Even though the markdowns on many of the items from today's Proenza sale will make you go wowza, I found lots of disappointed faces on shoppers who missed out on the handbags. Unfortunately, when I asked about restocking, I was told there would be none. So, as of now, you're best bet are the cheap jeans, scarves, or SLGs.

  2. Thanks for another great report Miz! I think we were on line together ;)

Handbag selection or lack thereof was disappointing. But there were some hidden gems spread out amongst the racks. I scored a yellow leather wrap skirt in perfect condition for $69 from $2,270! I think these were damages and irregulars because other similar items had pen marks, rips, etc. Hopefully they'll discount remaining clothes on the last day.

  4. I was there around 4pm today they had a few shoulder PS1 bags left but they were 2k (down from 6k) and shoes were pretty decimated as well. Lots of clothes though. Its definitely not as good as last year's sale.
