*SAMPLE SALE* Going Mendel

End-of-the-year holiday party invitations should be piling up soon, but do you have something fabulous to wear? If your answer is no, don't go mental, go Mendel! The purveyor of uptown opulence, J. Mendel, is hosting their bi-annual sample sale starting tomorrow, and this time, the event focuses heavily on black-tie parties and holiday festivities. The sample sale host invited me to take an early peek of the goods, so I swung by the venue earlier today to see what was on hand. Here's a rundown of what you can expect.

This week's J. Mendel sample sale is back at 265 W. 37th Street, 17th Floor. When I stopped by this afternoon, the inventory was being set up for tomorrow. Amongst the merchandise being unpacked, there was womenswear (a plethora of cocktail dresses and evening gowns), fur outerwear, bags, accessories (belts, hats, scarves, and jewelry), and of course, Manolo Blahnik shoes.

To delve into details, apparel was discounted up to 80% off. I found Gilles Mendel-designed pieces from Fall '13 through Spring '16, and there were lots of striking items full of sequins, graphic prints, beadings, and shimmery metallics. There were five racks of floor-length red carpet gowns that lined the back wall, and prices here ranged $950~$1,700. Markdowns on fur coats, jackets, and vests were very much similar to their last sale in March of this year, and shoppers will find seven racks of inventory. If you're looking for bridal gowns, the sale carries two racks, and prices were $400~$2,100.

Evening clutches, leather totes, and exotic skin handbags were displayed in the center of the room. Fabric clutches were $175, leather clutches were $195, exotic clutches were $325, leather totes were $395, and exotic bags were $595.

Scarves and hats were mostly of the fur variety (minks, chinchillas, shearlings, sables, and foxes). Prices on fur scarves were $250~$1,600 while hats were discounted to $700~$4,000. For budget-friendly J. Mendel accessories, there were belts for $95 and exotic skin bangles for $75~$240.

Just like previous sample sales, the only shoes available were Manolos. Each pair was priced at $250, but sizes were only available from 39 and up.

The good news is that if you still haven't made an appointment for this week's sale, there's still a way to attend. I'm told public walk-ins will be accepted starting Wednesday at 12pm until Thursday at 3pm (tomorrow is fully booked). And the even better news is that sample racks will be put out on Wednesday Thursday. Yay!

    1. Hi Julia,

Sorry but the price list for samples wasn't available when I dropped by today. However, in the past, samples were $100~$600.

    1. Hi Lisa,

I vaguely remember seeing it. If I'm correct, it's in the sixth photo from the bottom. Unfortunately, I didn't check the price on that one.
