Today, the Rachel Zoe sample sale opened a day early for press. To preview the offerings, I returned to the 260 Fifth Avenue venue excited and anticipating. Being a vintage fanatic, Rachel Zoe takes a lot of inspiration from vintage styles. That being said, today's sale merchandise consisted of 70s-inspired wardrobe items like black batwing tops, sharply cut tuxedos, faux furs, elongated trouser suits, and craftans. Other past season items--the Kylie tiered ruffle dress, tie-neck plunge blouse, vintage-inspired denims, leather jackets, and many more--that had Rachel Zoe's "I die" approval were available. But what really grabbed my attention was the scandalous mod sequined shift dress from her debut collection that caused quite a stir (photo above). Clothes were well stocked and sizes were available from 0~12. There was also a dedicated petite section. The jeans section was fully loaded as well, with sizes from 24~32.
While inventory was abundant, prices were rather disappointing (expensive!). Tops & sweaters were $100, jackets & coats were $250, leathers were $350, and pants were $125. If you like imitating Rachel Zoe's personal signature style, there were separate racks filled with maxi dresses in lots of varieties like leopard prints, peacock prints, and more.
In the shoe section, I spotted a small selection of pumps, flats, sandals, and wedges. Flats were $120, sandals were $150 & $175, pumps were $150, and boots/booties were $200. Sizes were available from 5 to 8.5. As for accessories, there were no handbags. A communal changing area that was curtained off was available in the back of the showroom with a limit of 10 items permitted for try-ons.
Since it is Rachel Zoe's first-ever sample sale, I suspect the sale ambiance will be "bananas" tomorrow. But to give you my opinion, I was not smitten enough by today's offerings due to the high prices. It's too early to say if there will be any further markdowns, but I'll make sure to update my fellow Mizhattanites via Twitter.

DeleteThanks for the great report
ReplyDeleteI went at about noon, when one would expect people would off for their lunch break. Yet, it the space was nearly empty; there were about 7-10 shoppers total on the floor. I found 3-4 items items I liked and fit me well, but bought nothing. The prices were much higher than typical sample sale. Plus, there was nothing I couldn't find elsewhere (i.e. no actual samples). Unless there's a price reduction on Saturday, Rachel will not be in my closet this season.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the update, Brandi!
DeleteMizhattan, will there be a price reduction? The prices are still steep. I wouldn't pay more than $80 for one of the maxi dresses...I mean, it is a sample sale!
ReplyDeletethe email from 260 this morning says there is a 30% reduction today
ReplyDeleteThank you! I received the same email just now. Take additional 30% off on all apparel.
