*SALE HUNT* Lowdown on Loehmann's Closing Sale

Last month Loehmann's, the NY-based discount chain, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Though the news came with sadness, it also meant a great bargain opportunity for discount shoppers. Or so I thought. Loehmann's going-out-of-business sale is well underway and I checked out their liquidation merchandise at their UWS location over the weekend. Sadly, no awesome deals were found.

To break down markdowns into groups, handbags were 10% off, outerwear was 40% off, and shoes were 50% off. Everything else, including women's and men's apparel, was reduced 10~40%. On the main floor of Loehmann's UWS branch, I found tons of jeans in addition to merchandise from Theory. The denim section was mostly comprised of Hudson Jeans and there were various styles like white skinnies, dark washes, and colored cottons. All jeans were 30% off the lowest ticketed price.

As I mentioned earlier, items from Theory took a big chunk of ground floor space. Amongst the clearance carts, racks, and bins, I found knit tops, office trousers, fitted blazers, tweed jackets, button down shirts, and much more. Unfortunately, discounts weren't so impressive. Though the selection was abundant, shoppers were only given an additional 20% off. What that translates to is: the ink navy blazer in the 4th photo below was priced $120 while the tweed jacket in the 5th photo was priced $184.

Downstairs, I found roughly 10 racks of shoes discounted 50% off. There were no big designer brands and certainly nothing appealing. As for handbags, I spotted only a few leather bags from no-name brands. Again, nothing worth mentioning.

It's reported that Loehmann's will permanently close their stores in March. Disappointingly, I was told no additional discounts would go into effect before the final closing. Unless you have a wonderful nostalgic memory and want to give the 92 year old company a personal farewell, I don't recommend dropping by.

  1. Aw, Mizhattan. Thank you for putting the time and effort into this report and sharing it with us. I'm sorry the sale is not really worth going to--I, too, would like to see Loehmann's go out with a bang.

  2. I wonder if 7th avenue will be better. The selection at that store is historically much more designer focused.

    1. I've heard the Chelsea location is the same deal.

    2. The Chelsea shoe section is sad. There's a ton of denim, Theory, and Rag & Bone, but the prices aren't great. Some $199 wedding gowns. But it's all mostly picked over and not worth the trip.

  3. I went to the Chelsea location over the weekend, and it was just so, so, sad. I don't think they have anything exceptional left. The top floor was practically empty, and pretty much everything was picked over. That said, I did find a Michael Kors leather jacket that I had been drooling over for weeks for $175 rather than the $400+ it was in the fall (I'm a diamond member, so I got an additional 10% off!) Could I have found the same thing at Nordstrom Rack? Probably. But getting in a final deal at Loehmann's before it closes was emotionally satisfying.
