*SAMPLE SALE* It's a Crew, Crew World

Fellow Mizhattanites, what are your plans for the 4th of July weekend? A fun getaway to the Hamptons? A fabulous rooftop party? A relaxing family barbecue? Wherever you're going to celebrate this Independence Day, you know you have to look good. And to help you choose the right look, the J.Crew summer sample sale is here. I attended the press opening late in the afternoon yesterday and came away thinking it was a crew, crew world.

To start off this report on a high note, I would like to first mention that there were TONS of summery items at today's preview. Colorful patterns, bold stripes, playful polka-dots, and floral prints were abundant in the women's apparel section and proved that this was indeed a summer sample sale. To get into details, I spotted an electrifying neon yellow scalloped dress (photo above), Hibiscus floral shorts, triangle dot boy shirts, floral print silk shirts, and embroidered skirts. The price list was identical to last year's sale with dresses at $30 & $60, pants at $25~$70, skirts at $25 & $40, sweaters at $35~$90, and tops at $15~$40. If you're willing to spend a bit more, there were several racks of J.Crew Collection pieces that were priced as marked. While browsing the Collection items, I spotted a lemon yellow silk dress for $140, a black embellished shoulder dress for $140, and a pair of bejeweled evening trousers for $398.

As always, the 10+ racks of shoes took up most of the space in the back of the venue. Sizes were available from 5 to 10. I found many different varieties such as Darby smoking slippers, Quinn ankle-cuff pumps, Lucie slingback flats, Wing tip oxford flats, Valentina pumps, Viv pointy flats, Kiki ballet flats, and wedge espadrilles. Again, prices were exactly the same as last year. Heels were $100, flats & sandals were $65, sneakers were $25, flip-flops were $10, and booties were $100.

The jewelry section was comprised of many sparkly things including statement necklaces, chandelier earrings, stone bracelets, and chain links. Here, prices ranged from $10 for brooches to $60 for statement necklaces.

The left wall was where all the additional accessory bins were situated. This included handbags. Inside the few bag bins, I found Claremont perforated totes, Claremont shoulder purses, Sophie crossbodys, Hughes satchels, Biennial satchels in brown and black, Edie purses in bi-color & black, and Mini bags. Medium and large leather bags were $130 while small sizes were $90. Adjacent to the bags were another 10 or so plastic bins filled with belts, socks, flip-flops, umbrellas, hats, pouches, and iPhone cases. These small accessories were priced $10 & $20.

The boys & girls apparel section, also known as Crewcuts, was located near the footwear. Unfortunately, if you're looking for boy's clothing, you'll find the selection very disappointing as there was only 1 multi-level rack of separates. For girls, on the other hand, there were so many adorable items to choose from. Just take a look at those colorful sweaters in the 20th photo below and you'll see what I mean.

Last but not least, the men's merchandise took up a whole separate space a few blocks down the road at 225 Fifth Ave. Though the venue was smaller, I found a healthy inventory of cashmere sweaters, tailored trousers, dress shirts, and casual tees. Tops were available in size XS to XXL while pants were in stock between size 28 and 38. Male shoppers will also find a large center table full of bins holding pocket squares, ties, underwear, belts, socks, and hats.

If this is your first J.Crew sample sale, please be prepared for a massive turnout today when the sale opens to the general public. If you're a sample sale veteran, you know the drill. Additional markdowns will most likely kick in on the last day of the sale. Happy Shopping!

  1. Thanks Miz!! I've never gone to this sale before (always such mixed reviews and long lines) but I was wondering, do they ever offer petite sized clothing at the sale?

    1. Hi Caroline,

I've seen petite sized clothes often at previous J.Crew sample sales but I don't recollect seeing any this time.

  2. Could you confirm that women's shoes only went to size 10? I wear size 12 and JCrew is one of the few brands that carry my size. Was hoping to pick up a few pairs (they had 12s in the past). Thanks!

  6. How is the line? Do you think its worth it to go after 7 or first thing tom when they open at 10?

  7. I went yesterday evening no long lines. No mirrors, no fitting rooms. The clothing is stocked by price not size. Walked out. Still had a good selection of shoes, jackets, blazers.

  8. Went late this morning, no line. There was a small selection of size 11-12 in women's shoes to the far left near the crewcuts. Shoes and jewelry overall seemed the best part of sale. Frankly the clothing left me very under impressed. Left with nothing and that is NOT like me ;)
